Luis Jacob
(Ontario, Canada)
he Eye, The Hole, The Picture
An artist, curator, and author, Luis Jacob uses a surprising variety of shapes, subjects, and media in his art practice. His concern with social relationships and with the artwork as potential catalyst for these relationships nevertheless traces the clear line of his multidisciplinary approach. His very recent Album X (2010), a series of images cut out from various printed sources, and Cabinet (Montréal) (2011), which he is creating for Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal from the McCord Museum’s collection of photographs, constitute the exhibition The Eye, The Hole, The Picture and engage a rich visual reflection on ways of looking, awareness of our multiple framings, fear of the void, and the image as site of intersubjectivity.
Born in 1971 in Lima, Peru, Luis Jacob lives and works in Toronto. An artist, curator, and writer, Luis Jacob has a highly varied practice that defies categorization but is unified by his constant concern with social interaction. Well regarded on the Canadian art scene, where a first retrospective exhibition of his works is currently touring (Quartier Éphémère, 2009; MOCCA, 2011), he first gained international exposure at Documenta 12 in Kassel in 2007. His works have been shown at the Städtisches Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach, Germany (2009) and the Kunstverein in Hamburg (2008), as well as in the exhibition Animism at the Kunsthalle in Berne (2010) and in Haunted, presented at the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao (2010). A founding member of the Anarchist Free University collective, Jacob is represented by the Birch Libralato Gallery in Toronto.
